Nunavut Moving & Services was founded as a business, but employment and community impact have been part of our purpose from the beginning. We believe businesses operating in Nunavut should contribute to the communities that make their success possible. For us, that contribution starts with people.
Opportunity Over Credentials
When NMS was established, we saw people who wanted to work but were sometimes excluded from opportunities because of limited experience, minor criminal records, difficult personal circumstances, or other barriers. We decided to focus on potential. Our approach was straightforward: give someone an opportunity, teach them, expect them to work hard, and let them demonstrate what they can do.
A Majority-Inuit Workforce
Over the years, this approach has provided employment and practical work experience to Nunavummiut, with Inuit employees historically representing the large majority of our workforce. That's not an accident — it's a deliberate commitment to ensuring that the people of Nunavut benefit directly from the work being done in their territory.
Investing in Young Nunavummiut
Young people have been particularly important to the NMS story. A first job can change someone's direction. It provides more than a paycheque — it can provide a reference, workplace experience, confidence, responsibility, new skills, and evidence that someone is capable of succeeding. For this reason, we have intentionally created opportunities for young Nunavummiut to participate in our workforce.
Skills That Travel
Employees can develop practical experience in moving, packing, warehousing, deliveries, cargo handling, furniture assembly, customer service, logistics, and teamwork. Not everyone who works for NMS will stay with us forever — and that's okay. Our goal is also to help people build skills they can carry into their next opportunity.
Keeping Opportunity in the North
Whenever possible, we believe services required in Nunavut should create opportunities within Nunavut. Building local logistics capacity means more work can be completed by people who live in the territory rather than relying exclusively on companies and workers flown in from southern Canada. It keeps employment, experience, knowledge, and economic activity closer to the communities being served.
A Different Measure of Success
We measure our success through contracts completed, customers served, parcels delivered, and moves successfully completed. But there is another measure that matters just as much: how many opportunities did we create along the way? Every person who gains experience, every young worker who earns a first paycheque, every employee who develops a new skill, and every dollar of economic activity retained in the North contributes to something bigger than our company. We're not only moving belongings. We're helping move opportunities forward.
